 June 2006

NEXT MEETINGS:

*07/22/06, 8/17/06, 9/21/06

Meetings are held every third Thursday of the month at the Honeoye Fish & Game Club @ 7:30.

*The July meeting will be held at the Summer Picnic at 11:00 a.m.

TWO TIER REGISTRATION:

You've probably heard by now or you've been notified by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles that beginning this year there's an increase of the snowmobile registration fee from $45 to $90 per sled.  In order to avoid this price increase you must join a snowmobile club.    When you become a member of a club you'll receive a voucher.  This voucher proves your club standing.  Submit the voucher with your registration and you'll receive the reduced rate.  Upon becoming a member of a snowmobile club your information is entered in to a database that NYSSA sponsors.  This database also proves your club standing.  This database is only accessible to the snowmobile club you join, NYSSA and the DMV.

Family memberships/vouchers will be issued to families described as husband/wife and their children (17 years of age and younger) who share the same address.  There is no cap on the amount of sleds one can register per membership as long as each sled is registered to the same address.  It also doesn’t matter if sleds are registered in different names as long as each person and their registration share the same address and are shown as a member of a club.  Vouchers will be made out in multiple names as long as the group is considered "family" as described above.

Single memberships/vouchers are issued to single individuals.   There is no cap on the amount of sleds one can register as long as each sled is registered to the same individual and address and the individual is a member of a club.

Business memberships will work the same way as family memberships.   It is important to complete the membership form and list owners/officers of a business and their family accordingly.  Business members receive advertising space on our map.

As a result of this new two-tier registration system, all clubs associated with New York State Snowmobile Association (NYSSA) voted on a standard minimum membership fee of $25.  This insures that no club can undercut another just because they offer a lower fee.  Thus our fees have risen from $15 to $25 for a single membership, and from $20 to $30 for a family membership.  Business memberships remain at $50.

More information is available at club meetings.  You can also visit the NYSSA website at www.nyssnowassoc.org. Please note their bulletin board for links to membership information and frequently asked questions.

EVENTS:

Our summer picnic "PIG ROAST" will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2006 from 12:00 to 6:00 at the Sandy Bottom pavilion.  HVR is providing the roast and beverages.  We plan to eat around 1:00.  Please bring a dish to pass such as your favorite snack, salad, dessert or food of choice.  Please RSVP to Jim Fyfe at 624-4482 by July 17th. This really helps us in knowing exactly how much pig and drinks we need for the picnic.  Remember, the sooner we know the better.  Also there's the lake for swimming, a playground area for kids, nature trails, basketball court, etc.  We have reserved the main pavilion for the day, so feel free to come early and enjoy the park.  This has always been a great time.   Rain or Shine!!   Please come and join us.   Some come by boat to so if you're a boater keep this in mind, but you'll need to beach it, anchor and wade to the shore as there are no docks.

SNOW SHOW:

This show, which is being held at the New York State Steam Pageant grounds located on Gehan Road in Canandaigua, has been tentatively scheduled for October 14, 2006.  We're working in conjunction with The Lehigh Valley Club and The Finger Lakes Snowmobile Club.  The highlight of this event will be snowmobile grass drags.   There will also be a major raffle.  Some items to be raffled are a new snowmobile, trailer, cash and a number of other great prizes.  There will be dealers present at this event and concession stands.  A youth snowmobile safety education class will be held at this event.  And there will be a "sled swap" - details to follow.  We want to thank Jim Fyfe and Dave Stevens for contributing their time in preparation for this event.  We need volunteers, so please let us know if you would like to help out.  Free admission for volunteers!!

THE TOWN OF RICHMOND AND HVR:

We recently finished the second of the two bridges on the Sandy Bottom trail in Honeoye.  This trail, known as S41A, is one of our links into town.  HVR has established a great relationship with the Town of Richmond.  These bridges help to improve this relationship even more.  HVR joined the Street-Scape committee last fall.  This allows us to provide input and knowledge of snowmobiling into the town improvements that you see going on today.  Vickie Wohlschlegel is our representative for this and she relays information back and forth through the meetings.  In the next few years you will see pocket parks, sidewalks, a new bridge in town, new street lighting and more.  Some additions to the town that may come out of this are snowmobile-parking areas.  Another major item for HVR is the construction of a snowmobile bridge over Honeoye Creek.  This bridge will allow a town curfew change and will prevent riding along Route 20A in town.  These plans are just in the works, but we now have the town and Street-Scape Committee willing to help us make these improvements reality.

TRAIL WORK:

A special thank you goes out to Dave Phillips, Todd Miller, Greg Zink, Jim Fyfe, Scott Wohlschelgel, Clint VanDewark and Dwight Slocum for the construction of the second bridge on the Sandy Bottom trail on June 3rd.

Upcoming work to include the following:

*Bridge on Kip Gillen's property - tentative date - August 26th.

*Canadice Trail improvements - tentative date - September 16th.

*Bulldoze and clear trails in the Naples and Honeoye areas.

*Installation of permanent signs and gates.

STORAGE:   Snowmobile and/or snowmobile trailer storage.  Large vehicle storage building that is clean, safe and                                                                                                      secure.   Reasonable summer rates.  Contact Brian Rayburn at 229-5563 or 314-1213.

EVENTS:

The Steak Roast was held at the Honeoye Fish & Game Club on February 11, 2006.  Thank you Mark Tones and staff for providing a great meal.

We prepared breakfast for the Livingston County Trap League shoot on March 19, 2006 at the HFGC.  Thank you to Denis Bruce, Dwight Slocum, Steve Robertson, Dave McMillan and Mark Tones who contributed to making this event a success.

Summer will arrive before we know it.  Our summer picnic is scheduled for July 22, 2006 so mark your calendars now.  Details to follow.  *Please note the July meeting will be held at this event.

Snow Show: Efforts are now being put in place for a combined Snow Show in Ontario County.  The Lehigh Valley Club tried last year to do what the Finger Lakes Club had done in the past, but the turn out was not what was hoped for.  The Finger Lakes and Lehigh Valley Clubs want to try it again with our participation.  The idea is to bring the show back bigger and better than ever with our combined efforts.  This show would include grass drags as a big focus.  Ideas and input will be needed at our April meeting.  Please attend and offer your ideas so we can pass along information to the other clubs and work out details for this event.

HVR CLOTHING:

We still have a couple XXL gray sweatshirts available with our embroidered logo - $20.00 each.  We also have new black sweatshirts available in sizes L and XL.  These sweatshirts feature GOT SNOW? embroidered on the back - $26.00 ea.  If you would like one please attend a meeting.

NYSSA ANNUAL MEETING:  APRIL 7-9, 2006   WATERTOWN, NY

We're sending two representatives from our club to the forum this year.  Denis & Vicki Bruce have volunteered to attend the weekend long meeting.   We look forward to hearing all about the seminars and latest news.

TRAIL EXPANSION:

This summer HVR will assess our area with plans to improve our trail system.  This means continuing to better our existing trail system by building bridges, installing culverts, clearing and brushing trails to make Honeoye a great place to ride.  We have taken on some major tasks over the past few years and it's starting to show more and more.  One primary need for improvement is trail marking up in the hills south of Harriet Hollister-Spencer Park.  Three areas are also going to be pulled in under our club's name.  These are as follows:

1.                             The trail that runs from Atlanta to Wayland, with the help of Mark R., will be brought into our jurisdiction.  Thus getting the trail under control and marked properly by working with National Grid and NYSSA to avoid losing this trail.

2.                            Steve Robertson will be working to expand on the Hemlock trail and into the Livonia area.

3.                            The final C4 connection into the Finger Lakes to Lehigh Valley Club's area so if we ever get snow we can ride Route 104 officially and legally.

These are all big tasks, but with the help of members and key people in these areas HVR hopes to work through each area and improve little by little to give us the best trails in the area.

TRAIL WORK:         WE NEED YOUR HELP!!  PLEASE VOLUNTEER!!

Upcoming trail work and goals for this summer:

1.         Finish Sandy Bottom trail second bridge.

2.        Build a bridge over the creek on Kip Gillen's property.

3.        Installation of 4x4 posts and chain or gates at road crossings per landowner's.

4.        Moving the C4 trail off of Canadice Hill Rd.  A lot of clearing will be necessary.

GROOMING EQUIPMENT:

Unfortunately, we really did not get to use the equipment a lot this year.   The weather just did not give us the big dump we really needed to put it all into full swing.   Grooming is still somewhat a learning experience for HVR but we are getting better.  This was year two for the Bombi and it did get out and some grooming was done from the gun club.  This location proved to work out very well.  The Skandic also got out from its location at Bruce Wohlschlegel’s.  This worked out to be a key spot as well.  A special thanks to the Honeoye Fish and Game Club and Bruce W. for letting HVR use these locations as a hub for the grooming equipment.  A thank you also goes out to Brian Rayburn for again offering to store grooming equipment over the summer.

FUTURE FUNDING:

Looking down the line at the next couple years, HVR needs to put out projections and goals to see where we're headed as far as signage, bridges, equipment and improvements.  Along with these goals we need to analyze the funding that will be coming in and how to spend it best to improve our trails.  This will be a topic at the next meeting and input from members is appreciated.

STORAGE:   Snowmobile and/or snowmobile trailer storage.  Large vehicle storage building that is clean, safe and                                                                                                      secure.   Reasonable summer rates.  Contact Brian Rayburn at 229-5563 or 314-1213.

FOR SALE:  Tilt bed trailer, 4’x8’ with 7/8” ball.  $140.  Contact Dale Schaefer @ 367-2849.

NYSSA SUPER RAFFLE:

A BIG thanks to all who helped out with this fund-raiser.    We had over $1200.00 in ticket sales.   Our club gets to keep half of these proceeds, which amounted to approximately $600.00.

HONEOYE STREET SCAPE COMMITTEE:

In the last newsletter, we informed you that we were asked to join in with the Street Scape Committee.  HVR would like to thank Vickie Wohlschlegel for volunteering to be our contact and lead with these efforts.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEETING:

On January 5, 2006, Clint VanDewark was the guest speaker at the Chamber of Commerce meeting held at the HFGC.  This was HVR's chance to give a report to those, some of whom are not in the loop of the snowmobiling sport, information about our club's future goals, our present projects and our local community involvement.  The consensus after the meeting was that the committee is very impressed with what we are doing and they are now aware of the improvements we have made.  Some members were surprised at the impact snowmobiling makes and how much we are linked to a statewide network.  This was a great boost to both HVR and to the Chamber to see what snowmobiling is to date here in our area and what doors it may open in the future.

SAFETY TIP:

For all of you winter enthusiasts:  All these winter activities involve ice of some form and even if you never go out on it - let this be a warning to you.  Whether you go on the ice or not you can truly never know when you may encounter thin ice on a lake, pond, stream or creek.  So are you prepared? If you are, you at least have an ice pick of some sort in your winter coat pocket.  If you don't have an ice pick - make one.  All you need is a piece of wood, stick or branch that is at least 1½” in diameter and cut it into two 4" lengths.  Take each length and drive a 2" long nail or screw half way into the end of the wood.  Cut the head off the nail or screw and put a piece of cork on each end; keep these in your coat pockets.  This simple task could save your life.  If you fall through the ice the water will soak you to the point that your winter clothes will easily add 50 lbs to your existing weight.  The water temperature this time of year is easily in the 30's (we shiver in the summer when the lake is in the 70's).  The ice where you fell through is wet and acts as the best slip and slide you could ever dream of.  As you try to climb out, the ice breaks apart and you are so cold it hurts to try to move, but you try to grab anything to keep from sliding into the water.  Now you wish you had two small ice picks, even one would be nice!  Each year people die from falling through thin ice because of shock either in the water or from severe hypothermia after getting out.  This is a serious topic.  With Honeoye Lake right at our doorstep and neighbors with ponds you should be prepared.

TRAIL UPDATES:

1. BYPASS AROUND THE SWAMP:

Both bypass trails are open and marked.  Note these trails run through residential areas.  It is extremely important that all riders adhere to the following guidelines to help ensure HVR is able to keep these bypass trails open.  STAY ON THE TRAIL, USE SLOW SPEEDS AND LOW BEAMS (to limit headlights shining into houses).

2. VALLEY INN & AQUA SOURCE PARKING LOT:

Use extreme caution in this area due to traffic coming in and out.  Do not run by the ditch at Aqua Source’s display.  This is an extreme hazard area.  Signs indicate where to ride.  Staying in and along the edge of the parking lot is the recommended route. Stop signs are also located at each side of the parking lot.  Use slow speeds.   Remember, sleds don’t steer the greatest on pavement, so watch for parked cars and traffic.  GO SLOW!

3. NAPLES AREA REMINDER:

The main trail that crosses Cotes Road is changed to avoid Phil Huber’s property.  As you are heading south, turn left on Cotes Rd. then turn right about 200 yards down (+/-).  See signage for this route.

4. THE C4 CONTINUATION FROM HARRIET HOLLISTER SPENCER PARK:

This will head toward Monkey Run and around the north side of Garlinghouse Rd. to the additional S44 trail in to Naples.

FOR SALE: Tilt bed trailer, 4’x8’ with 7/8” ball.  $140.  Contact Dale Schaefer @ 367-2849.

HONEOYE STREET SCAPE COMMITTEE - WE NEED A VOLUNTEER:

Recently HVR was asked to join in with the Street Scape Committee.  You might say, the Town of Honeoye wants to beautify itself, and they want to keep Snowmobilers in mind.  We need someone from HVR to help voice the clubs interest and incorporate snowmobiling into the town’s enhancements that are coming.  If you are interested, please contact Clint VanDewark for details 367-9216. This is a big chance for HVR to show what we are about and take part in the community!

HVR DVD & FLYER:

A DVD containing photos of HVR Events is available at the meetings.  Also HVR’s flyer will be hitting the shelves at local businesses to help encourage people who are not members to join.  These will be located at local businesses and the Visitors Association in Canandaigua to help drive home who we are and what we’re about.

TRAIL CHANGES TO BE MADE AWARE OF:

1. The bypass around the swamp:

(To get in and out of Honeoye on the north side of Route 20A). This is currently closed off!!  HVR is working very hard with the DEC to get the permits finalized.  And we’re waiting for an additional landowner to come on board to make this a success.  Note this trail is shown on the map as (HVR) and this will be opening up, but please be patient HVR begs you; this whole area is critical for today and the future.

2. The Continuation of S41A on our map:

This will bring you around the south side of Route 20A. This trail is currently being finalized and marked. This year there will be two small creek crossings with some very basic bridge construction and next year this trail will be enhanced similar to the Faith Bible Church property.  Note:  Stay on this marked trail as this is a completely new trail and HVR is being watched.  This trail will connect you to C4 south of the Faith Bible Church from Sandy Bottom.

3. Naples area:

The main trail that crosses Cotes Road is changed to avoid Phil Huber’s property.  As you are heading south, turn left on Cotes Rd. then turn right about 200 yards down (+/-) see signage for this route.

4. The C4 continuation from Harriet Hollister Spencer Park:

This will head toward Monkey Run and around the north side of Garlinghouse Rd. to the additional S44 trail into Naples.

5. A Heads Up:

North of Honeoye, on Knight’s property, HVR wants to make it clear that you are to STAY ON THE MARKED TRAIL!!  You will see on the maps, No Snowmobile Signs, these identifiers let you know where you need to be on your toes.   Landowners have specific requirements for these areas.  We, HVR, are to abide by them in order to keep the trail system. These requirements are everything from Stay on Trail to Keep Out signs.  Watch for the trail signs and abide by them.  This does not mean the other areas are free reign.  These are just areas that HVR is struggling to keep due to people abusing the trails.  If you see others abusing this privilege, you, as HVR members, must take a stand and pull those riders in so we don’t lose our trails!

6. To the North and to the South:

Clubs around us are starting to peek out of the woodwork.  A state funded trail is now in place south of us (South of Loon lake).  NYSSA has voiced interest in HVR helping to push on those in the Quad County Club area to see how we can connect to this trail.  HVR would not be making this trail; we would only show guidance to those south of us as to how it can be done, similar to what we have done with the Lehigh Valley Club. The Finger Lakes Club and the Lehigh Valley Club are also making headway and a formal connection to us is being made so we can ride from Honeoye to the Manchester area and further north.  A bridge has been constructed over Mud Creek and things are slowly coming together.

7. We Need Help Clearing Some Trails!

If you can help, please contact Rich Kraft, Clint VanDewark, or Scott Wohlschlegel.

 LOCAL LAW:

A new Richmond Town law was put on the table for review on November 8th.  The law was focused on keeping snowmobiles off the sidewalks in the town.  HVR is in support of this portion of the law, but we did not want it to lead us into being shut out of the town in the future.  HVR stepped up to the plate, with the help of Scott Wohlschlegel, who did some research and sent information to the town prior to the meeting.  We were ready to fight our case, but it turned out that we were well received at the meeting.  The information handed to the town ahead of time helped the town realize that the law was not necessarily needed.  The meeting ended with HVR working with the town to both self regulate riders and to work on developing existing laws to prevent the riding on town sidewalks, etc.  A clear success!

 NEW:

The HFGC will have several different varieties of snowmobile oil, spark plugs and other miscellaneous items for sale at the Club in case anyone gets into a jam on the trail.  Thanks to Cycle Enterprises for supplying these items.

 FOR SALE:

*HVR homemade pull behind Drag 4’x7’ with single blade.  Sled needs standard hitch to pull it.  Contact Dave Phillips or Brian Steenburn for details.

If you are unable to sell these tickets, please mail them back to the club.  HVR does not like to force members to sell tickets, but this is a great fundraiser for us.  The funds raised by these tickets help us enhance club functions such as mailings, expenses and events like the Christmas Party and Steak Roast, as we cannot use trail funding for these costs.

HVR DVD & FLYER:

A DVD containing photos of HVR Events and the like is now available.  Dwight Slocum is making movies!  Dwight can burn a DVD for you that contain photos of our club at work and club events.  This DVD contains some great shots of members and our area.  These DVDs are free but to get one, you need to come to a meeting or a major event.  The DVDs will be updated monthly if events happen in between or if some good winter fun occurs and is caught on tape we will be incorporating it into the following month’s DVD.   Dwight is also building a great flyer to help encourage people who are not members to join.  These will be located at local businesses and the Visitors Association in Canandaigua to help drive home who we are and what we are about.

 TRAIL ISSUE:

Bypass around the swamp to get in and out of Honeoye.  HVR is finalizing two routes.  The first is through the south section of Sandy Bottom Park; the other is behind Aces to bypass the swamp area.  We have struggled with this, but we’ve recently had an outstanding break through.  The DEC is going to work with us and is drafting a TRP permit that is tentative for the next 5 years.  This permit will allow us to provide a new trail that goes around the swamp area, thus eliminating the nasty wet slop we have ridden through for years.  Review the next newsletter for details and confirmed new routes.

 NEW LAWS:

NYS is in the process of implementing a new law and it was recently passed in the senate.  This will affect snowmobile registration costs.  We should see this law go in affect for the 2006-2007 season.  As it stands now, the new law means that members of a snowmobile club will continue to pay the $45 registration fee per snowmobile.  This cost will increase to $100 per snowmobile for non-club members.  Another part of this NYS law is implementing a 55 mph speed limit. This will also come into affect with the new registration fees.

A new Richmond Town law has been put on the table for review.  The town will be open to discussion on November 8th to review the new law before it is put in place.  The law is focused on keeping snowmobiles off the sidewalks in the town.  HVR is in support of this portion of the law, but we want to make sure that it doesn’t lead us into being shut out of the town in the future.  The new law states situations regarding permission for us to mark and post trails, so we should be covered.  HVR would appreciate members attending this town meeting to show their support of the club.  We need to voice HVR’s positive impact on our community such as the new Sandy Bottom Trail bridges, enhanced business to local restaurants, gas stations, etc.  This is to help ensure that the law does not turn against us in the future.

Next Monthly Meetings:

September 15th, October 20th, November 17th and December 15th.

Meetings are held every third Thursday of the month at the Honeoye Fish & Game Club @ 7:30.

Events:

The HVR Landowner & Summer Picnic held in July was a huge success.  We would like to thank Bob Gray for coordinating this event.  Bob, you did a great job!!  Also, thank you Vicki L. for mailing the announcements and to everyone else who helped out!!  The weather was a little crazy that day – but it didn’t put a damper on the great time everyone had.

HVR provided breakfast at the Honeoye Fish and Game Club on Sunday, June 26th as they hosted a Sunday morning trap shoot with the Livingston County Trap League.    Thank you Denis B, Yvonne P, Vicki L, Dwight S, Cindy S and Jim F.  Mark & Sue are continuing their bar management at the Club and have asked us if we would like to do two more breakfasts for them.  They’re also looking forward to having the snowmobilers stop in this season!!

The Manchester Chamber of Commerce is putting on a large scale out door show. This event is planned for mid November.  NYSSA will be in attendance along with over 100 vendors.  HVR has been asked to participate in this event to represent and promote snowmobiling in our area.  We plan on attending this event and also plan to take the groomer.  Please see the website for updates along with newsletters for more on this event.

Trails:

The Sandy Bottom Trail 40’ Bridge is COMPLETED!!

(We’re still awaiting approval on the second 20’ bridge).

A big thank you to everyone who pitched in and helped

out.  Special thanks to Steve M, Tim S, Scott W, Dwight S,

Garry W, Jack S, Brian S, Clint V, Roy W, Austin W, Tom C and

Wards Lumber. The Bombi will now be able to run this trail.

With the bridge added to the Sandy bottom trail, additional routes

are being developed into town to avoid the dreaded swamp and

Main Street, thanks to Rich Kraft.  We are currently waiting final

approval from the DEC on a bypass around these areas.  This year

there will be alternative routes in and out of town due to the

flooding last season.  Each route is being planned with the Bombi in mind and the amount of traffic the trail will receive.  Please be aware of these changes since old routes will be closed and off limits to riders.

Trails (continued):

A large bridge will be installed behind Faith Bible Church; this will change the trail route to accommodate the Bombi and riders.   This work is scheduled to start on September 10th.  We’re meeting at 8:30 that morning at the Faith Bible Church and we need lots of help.  The bridges that are currently in this area will be removed and relocated to Big Tree Rd.

Trail clearing needs to start soon in town and on the Hemlock Trail.  We need volunteer help to get this project wrapped up.

TRAIL POSTING scheduled for Saturday, November 5th.  We need help!!  If you can pitch in, please be at the Honeoye Fish & Game Club at 8:00 a.m.  Rain or Shine!   Bring a sledgehammer and chain saw.  Hotdogs and hamburgers after!  You probably noticed, last season, the areas posted with two stakes through the fields making a specific route for riders.  This was done to prevent riders from wandering off the trails.  In order to keep our trails, we have to keep riders on the trails.  We have found that double staking these areas achieves this result and the landowners like HVR to be in control.  Unfortunately this means a lot of signs have to be pounded in – and we mean A LOT!!  Some areas are a must and we really need help with this.

Trail Issue:

Four Wheelers on Naples/Atlanta Trail need to be stopped.  These riders are stating they have permission to be on the trail and are using our name.  HVR does not support ATV’s on the trails.  If this activity does not stop, this area will be shut down to snowmobiles for good.  If you are riding this area, please contact the landowner’s personally to discuss use of these trails.  Some properties have been sold, so what used to fly in these areas is no longer the case.   Again, HVR does not support ATV’s on the trails, primarily at the request of landowners.

New Law:

A new law was recently passed in the senate that will affect snowmobile registration costs.   We should see this law go in to affect for the 2006-2007 season.   As it stands now, the new law means that members of a snowmobile club will continue to pay the $45 registration fee per snowmobile.  This cost will increase to $100 per snowmobile for non-club members.

Fun Facts:

How much do snowmobilers contribute to the economy?

Snowmobilers in Canada and the United States spend over $20 billion on their life-style activity each year. The average snowmobiler spends $6,550 on a snowmobile and $1,100 on accessories such as clothing and trailers.   Approximately 10 percent of snowmobilers purchase a new snowmobile each year. In addition, the average snowmobiler spends over $3,000 per year on snowmobile tourism-related activities (food, gas, lodging, travel).

Using these figures and 150 HVR members x $3,000 = $450,000 per year spent on snowmobiling here locally. Wow!

The following shows the impact made and date it was recorded:

Wyoming $189.5 million in 1995.                       Vermont exceeded $600 million in 2003.

Alberta $162.6 million in 1995.                         Ontario over $932 million in 1998.

Pennsylvania $161 million in 2000.                     New Hampshire $1.2 billion annually in 2000.

Quebec over $1.5 billion.                                   Washington $92.7 million.
Utah $52.6 million.                                            New York $476.2 million in 1998.

Anchorage and Mat-Su Borough over $35 million annually in 2000; $7 million in 2003.

Maine $261 million in 2003.

Attention Officers, Members, and Authorities,

Last night I received a phone call regarding the Trail that Runs from Liddiard Rd. over Cotes Rd. to Richards Rd. for those that may not know this area by road names it is south of Monkey Run, the area known as the bowl by some, the area has wide open fields and allot of fun areas to ride due to drifting. We are currently in jeopardy of loosing this trail route and not because of Snowmobiliers because of four wheelers. This is because some people the landowner has stopped have stated they are members of a local club what club I do not know? and they have access to this trail. This is false our Snowmobile trails are off limits to all other vehicles unless stated by the land owner this means it is on a case by case basis. To keep our trails we need to prove to the land owners that we can help manage the problems that come up and do what we can to help them.

From the land owner he has told me that people unload four wheelers by the truck and trailer load on these seasonal roads this past summer it has gotten out of control. He has lost parts of his Corn Crop due to them and the area is all rutted up. The last time He stopped a group of them they tolled him there was nothing he could do it was there trail. And they acted so belligerent to him that was it. Currently he is in the process of installing gates and barricades he has some installed already and is continuing across his property to stop them from coming in.

He has stated that he would like to see us to continue to be able to use this trail route for snowmobiles only if people can stay ware they are supposed to. This Thursday night I am meeting with him to walk the property and get a feel for what we need to do. The plan is for after we walk it we can get a figure on signs posts ect needed. Then mark it a couple weeks prior to bow season. Riders must stay between markers and out of the property until after hunting season. Or the trail is shut down for good. This Land owner wants to work with us lets not loose this trail. Let’s do what we can to help him out.

As for ATV’s they are off limits and will be fined if they come onto the property! Please spread the word that if the ATV’s don’t stop we won’t be riding anything in this area in the future!

May 4, 2005

  • Our next meeting will be Thursday, June 16th at 7:30 p.m.
  • We will be having monthly meetings throughout the summer to keep on top of things.
  • We will be looking into mailing out postcards of some kind throughout the summer keeping everyone informed of work schedules, upcoming social events, and work events.  (Yvonne Polle will possibly be able to print these out for us, which will be a great help!).
  •

NEWS:

At the past meeting we discussed our goals to tackle this summer.  They are as follows:

1.       Build Bridges in town on the sandy bottom trail. Poles have been set for the first bridge and the poles for the second are ready to go.

2.       Trail into and out of town; new routes are being established. One to the north of 20A and one into Sandy Bottom on the south of 20A to avoid the flooded swamp area (letters have been written to pending landowner).

3.       Need to work on bridges behind church by pond and/or shorten the groomer bypass. Installation of culverts or a change in route is a possibility per landowners (pending).

4.       Town of Canadice/Canadice Hill Road.

5.       Park trail out of the south end through Mike Cudlip’s property (pending).

6.       Fix culvert and widen trail between Allens Hill and Abbey Road.

7.       Continue to install roadside trail markers where possible for identification and trail closing.

8.       Widen a section / corner of the trail on Dulan’s property to accommodate Bombi for the Hemlock trail.

9.       We are working with Stone Construction to route behind their shop in town along the fence line and County property.  C.A.D is closed and Stone may be purchasing the lot so changes may occur in the near future.  We need to clear some of the brush behind the collision shop in town to accommodate the groomers better.

There was much discussion at the past meeting with regard to the Groomer and where our priorities should lay as to where we are grooming.  This was our first season of trying to run everything (having people operating the groomer) and cover all areas as well.  Obviously, there is room for improvement and hopefully for next season we will have a smoother system in place.  Any feedback is welcome.  It was mentioned that our main priority should be to groom around the Gun Club area first.  Trails need to be set up so that we CAN groom anywhere from the club outwards without having to trailer it somewhere.  We also need to SHARE the responsibility of grooming by having at least four plus people on the schedule that can operate as back-ups. Currently we have five people that have expressed serious interest in this and will plan to take part this next season.  If you are experienced with operating machinery and this is something that you would like to do next season, please let Brian Steenburn, our new Equipment coordinator, or our new Trail coordinator (Steven May) know and we can get your name added to the list. As the season starts to come back around each person signed up will meet and go through the equipment so they are up to speed with how it operates.

The Finger Lakes Visitors Association would like to have a flyer of some sort to promote our snowmobile club, bed and breakfasts, etc., Due to the amount of calls and interest they have seen this past year for the sport of snowmobiling. One to bring people into our area but to get them educated and apart of our club.  Dwight Slocum has offered to help create something for them to use.

FYI – We have received the remainder of the trail funding from the County in the sum of $14,386.95.

 EVENTS:

We have scheduled our annual summer picnic for July 16th at Sandy Bottom beach in Honeoye.   Bob Gray will be looking into holding a pavilion for that day.  More information to follow as the date gets closer.  In the meantime, mark your calendars!

On May 28th and 29th, the Honeoye Gun Club is hosting a yard sale.  If you would like to sell some of your things there, you may rent a table for $10.  More information on this can be obtained from Mark Tones at the gun club.

We will be having a breakfast on Sunday, June 26th at the Gun Club.  Prep work should begin by 7:00 a.m.  Anyone that may be interested in helping out should contact either Jim Fyfe or Bob Gray.

OUR 2005 HVR OFFICERS ARE AS FOLLOWS:

PRESIDENT – Clint VanDewark

VICE PRESIDENT – Dwight Slocum

TRAIL MANAGER – Steve May (replacing Dave Phillips)

MARKETING – Scott Wohlschlegel

EVENTS COORDINATOR – Bob Gray (replacing Jim Fyfe)

TREASURER – Vicki Wohlschlegel (replacing Chip Reitz)

SECRETARY – Vicki Lewis (replacing Kim Phillips)

EQUIPMENT COORDINATOR – Brian Steenburn

March:

*Next Meeting March 23rd   (NOTE:  This meeting is being held on a Wednesday due to the upcoming holiday)

*Honeoye Road Side Clean Up Day is April 23rd.  Anyone interested in helping out should meet at the Gun Club at 8:00 a.m.  HVR members take care of Curtis Rd. The Gun Club takes care of Howcroft Rd. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

*Last Meeting of the season will be held Thursday, April 21st

*There will be a mid- summer meeting re: funding, trails, and party.  Tentative date is July 21s .

Trails officially close by mid to late March per conditions. Pay attention to signs.  Some areas will have a chain with a “Trail Closed” sign.  These will be put back up signifying that the trail is closed for the season. Other area trail signs will be removed and all signs should be taken down by the last week of March. If signs are down, the trail is closed for the season. Please be aware this is at the request of landowners such as Knight Farms where if signs are not taken down we will not be able to post the trail again.

Annual NYSSA Meeting located in Auburn NY April 9th and 10th.

HVR would like to have three people attend the Conference.  This is where we as snowmobiliers learn the in’s and out’s on Trail funding, Insurance, Grants, what other clubs are doing, pointers, and where we, as clubs, can vote on what goes on within our State For Snowmobiling, such as Registration rates, trail funds, and more. HVR has three seats for this that will represent 90 snowmobiliers. For the past four years we have sent members to this and it is well worth it. If you are interested in going to represent HVR, please contact Clint VanDewark at 367-9216 for details and information. This is where we, as a club, help to make snowmobiling a part of NYS. And if you do not think snowmobiling is big in our state you will after this meeting.  It is a shocker!

Election of officers to be held on March 23:

If you want to be a part of keeping this club going and you have new ideas, how about being an officer of the club? Or, if you think you know who can do the best job, come on and take part in the Elections. Tell us what you want to see happen within HVR and our area.

Future club plans and events to be thinking about:

  1. Bridges in Honeoye on the Sandy Bottom trail.  We are looking at a work date for April or May.
  2. Trail changes due to swamp area in Town, and improvements to trail on Canadice Hill Rd., along with trail out of the South end of Harriet Hollister Spencer Park.
  3. Summer Party Date and where will it be held?
  4.

Fun Facts:

Hey did you know there is a Snowmobile Hall of Fame?

Located in St. Germain, Wisconsin is the Snowmobile Hall of Fame. They have everything from Historic race sleds, trophies, clothing, photos, and more.

There is also the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame “ISHOF” located in Bovey, Minnesota.  This group and organization are dedicated to recognizing the men and woman who have made snowmobiling what it is today. Who would have guessed this type of thing even existed!

I've posted this letter from a member of our club.

Kim,                                           (picture of me)

I just thought I would send you a quick note to say hello from Kuwait. I was

activated with the 98th Division out of Rochester and sent here (to Kuwait).

Anyway, it is probably one of the more original excuses for non-membership

renewal that you have heard in a while!! lol. Its funny, I miss my family,

my friends and yes, even my civilian job, but I find myself constantly day

dreaming about snow filled adventure. It really gets me through the day

sometimes....

Kim, I just want to thank you for all of the work that you do for HVR and

could you also pass on a "thank you" to whomever updates the HVR website? I

am lucky enough to get web-access during my off hours and when I have time,

I check the HVR website to read (and sometimes re-read) the news letters and

stuff...LOL, I have even downloaded last years trail map. Anyway, now you

know that the HVR website is famous enough to be accessed from the other

side of the world... :)

Oh, and there are 6 foot drifts here already...except that there isn't any

snow... isn’t that a hoot? Take care. I should be back sometime near the

end of May hopefully. Take care, and think snow!

Sincerely,

Staff Sergeant Marc Acito

New work to be completed:

Sandy bottom trail needs two bridges built.  We have the poles to construct the bridges but we have run out of time and lack of manpower this year.  The old footbridge (1st bridge) needs to be removed and a new one built.  The poles are on site for the construction.  Clint VanDewark has the plans to construct the new bridge.  A second bridge needs to be built to the south of the first one.  We will utilize the poles from the old footbridge to span this creek.  This bridge is in wet lands and requires a permit from NYSDEC which the Town of Richmond has agreed to acquire for our club.

For this year the trail is passable but use caution and follow all signs and posted speeds.  Crossing of shallow creeks will be required due to the lack of bridges.

Special events:

Our Steak Roast is being held on Saturday, February 12th.  Cocktails will begin at 6:30, Dinner at 7:30, and for all you closet singers, Karaoke will begin at 9:00 p.m.  Please see the enclosed flyer for more information.   You need to make your selection and mail the bottom portion of the sheet to Vicki Lewis NO LATER than February 8th, please.

Our Christmas party was a great success.  It was good to see so many members gather together to celebrate the holiday season.  A great big “Thank You” goes out to Dave’s Towing for supplying us with some holiday cheer in the way of a keg!  Thanks!

Treasurer Notes:   The current balance is $3727.78.

Fun Facts:

TAS/Scorpion and the Scorpion snowmobiles, what happened to it and where did it go? The Scorpion snowmobile started in Crosby, Minnesota in 1961 with its first prototype built of fiberglass, plywood, rubber & metal cleat track with a 2x4 suspension. This prototype evolved into a sled said to be reliable and durable. To prove it in 1967 TAS started a race from Crosby MN. To Anchorage AL. 3,800 miles with extreme winds and -70deg. Temps with nothing but three stock sleds and one tow sled with food and clothing. They completed it in 28 days four of witch were spent convincing Canada to let them cross the borders. Within the next few years they moved forward making mopeds, and other machines until Mother Nature stopped producing the snow that always came and inventory and company expenses became too much. By March of 78 Scorpion snowmobiles were sold to there long time rivals Arctic Enterprises. They ensured production would continue, but by 1980 Arctic Cat closed the Crosby facility and completed its last Scorpion snowmobiles in its own facility in Thief River Falls MN.

Date:  November 5,2004

Schedule of upcoming meetings: - November 18th, December 16th, January 20th, February 17th, March 17th, and April 21st, which is when the elections of new officers will be held.

NOTE:  All meetings are held on the 3rd Thursday of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the Honeoye Fish and Game Club on Howcroft Road.  Everyone’s input is welcome, so please try to attend.

News and Events:   IMPORTANT:  ALL trails are closed until after gun season (which ends December 14th).  The exception is the trail to Locks, which is closed until December 22nd (after muzzle loading season).  This is all per the landowner’s request, so please abide to this since we don’t want to ruin the relationships that we have built with them.  This also goes for the rules and the common courtesy of sticking to the EDGE of the fields where signs request us to do so.  A few people can very easily ruin it for everyone so please remember this when you’re out riding on someone else’s property.  It’s a privilege that can easily be taken away just as quick as it was given.

Enclosed you will find some NYSSA raffle tickets to get you started.  There are more coming in the mail so we will be mailing more to you with the next newsletter.  These are for the NYSSA super raffle.  There will be only one drawing this year that will be held in April.  There are approximately 21 prizes, with a couple different snowmobiles being some of the choices to choose from.  Our club gets to keep half of the money with the other half going to NYSSA, each ticket is $5.00 we are selling these to help raise money for the club what tickets are not sold please send them back to us. We would like each member to try to sell 10 tickets if possible. Thank You for your help and support.

Trail information and update:    Dave Phillips has ordered all of the signs for the changes that we will instill on the corridor trails.  Examples of these are bridge ahead, stop ahead, bend ahead, etc.   This will help give everyone a heads up as to what’s coming on the trail.   These are due in some time in the next week or so.

There was talk at the last meeting of possibly putting a snow fence up along the side of White Road by the water tower.  The snow bank that the town creates there with the plows has been a concern. We will be working with the town of Richmond to improve this situation.

At Harriet Hollister Spencer Park permanent signs have been installed.  The final posts and signs to finish up within the park will be installed after the park finishes their road work and bulldozing of the newly widened snowmobile trails. Once this is done we will finish installing the rest of the permanent signs within the park.

Trails have also been bulldozed and widened on the Bristol trail coming down to Lower Egypt and up through Bob Grays Property.

The Hemlock Trail has also seen some attention with the addition of a new bridge, signs, and clearing to accommodate grooming equipment.

Bridge work on the sandy bottom trail is also in the process one 40’ covered bridge will be installed along with a second 15’ bridge. Currently the town is doing there final approval and permit process and installation is getting started.

All trail maps will be completed and sent with the December newsletter.  Anyone that would like a copy of last years in the mean time can call Kim Phillips at 624-7707.   I have a few left over or you can print it out off our website.

The town of Richmond has confirmed that they will be installing an 18” culvert pipe next week on Howcroft Rd. and Ashley Rd.  We will be removing the bridges  that we have in these locations and we’ll mark the road crossings similar to what was done in Harriet Hollister Spencer Park by installing two 4x4 posts 10’ apart.   These points will be visible as HVR’s trail system with a yellow chain that will run between the two to mark trails closed during off seasons such as the one on County Rd. 37 south of the gun club. This is to help HVR with trail issues during off seasons and to help give our trail system an official and professional look.

Special events:   Our Christmas party is going to be Saturday, December 18th  (6:00pm) at the Honeoye Fish and Game Club.  See enclosed flyer for more information.  This is going to be a “dish to pass” with the main dish being BBQ chicken.  There will be a band starting at approx. 9:00pm. R.S.V.P. to Jim Fyfe at 624-4482.

Our Steak Roast will be held on February 12th details on this event will be discussed further at the November meeting.

Treasurer Notes:  The current balance is $4800.00 with all bills paid.

What is a 19761 Snobyke?

The 1971 snobyke is just like it sounds and is basically the early version of the Hawk that is out on the market today.  The snobyke is a track-driven until with a front ski and said to give the handling ease similar of those of a small cycle, but it is a lot harder than they made it sound.

The track is driven by a single sprocket and powered by an 8hp. two-cycle engine.  It features an all steel frame, ball bearing, full floating suspension system, torque converter, and over-sized breaking system.  It was capable of speeds up to 30 mph. standing 34” high, 12”wide, and weighed in at 97 lbs.  This was the glorified winter moped of it’s time.

Since July a lot has unfolded, September & October are going to be fun and we are going to need volunteers to make it all successful!

July and August have been a busy time and are showing that things are moving along quite well. Our funding through the County is going smoothly. The County Planning Department has submitted our paperwork and by November we should have a figure of what our funding will be for the 2004-2005 season. There will be some trail changes with the naming of the current Corridor 4 Trail due to it now connecting into the Corridor 4 trail that reaches toward us from the Palmyra Area. Manchester Shortsville area is putting together a club and will be bringing this Corridor 4 trail from the Manchester Area to Route 332. The Fingerlakes will then pick it up from this point to connect into our trail system. We, HVR, will bring our Corridor 4 trail from Pierpont Rd. North to Briggs Rd. and Allen’s Hill Rd. The East section of the current Corridor 4 Trail coming into town will change to a secondary trail. The Bristol Trail is now part of the NYS trail system and will also be a secondary trail. New trail #’s will be on the new maps and posted on the trail signs on both of these routes.

We are also happy to announce that we have moved forward with the purchase of a Bombardier Bombi & Drag. At the end of August Dave Semmel & Clint VanDewark drove to pick up our new piece of grooming equipment from the Trail Finders Snowmobile Club located just South of Plattsburg, NY. The Bombi is 6’ wide and 10’ long, the drag it pulls behind is also 6’ wide and is about 10’ in length. It is powered by a 1,600 4 cylinder Ford engine.

The plans are to continue to run the snowmobile and drag we have used in the past on the Bristol trail and other trails we can’t get to with the Bombi. The Bombi will run out of the Gun Club and cover as much as we can with it. Right now we are working with the Park and landowners to accommodate this machine and have not yet encountered any problem areas. A lot of the landowners we have spoken to have been very open to us using the grooming equipment. We have also heard from the landowners that what we are doing is great and that they enjoy working with us. This is a great pat on our backs.  The more we continue to improve our trail system the more pleased the landowners are. Thank you to the riders for staying on the trails as this has improved our relationship with the landowners considerably.

This fall is a crazy time as we have a lot of events and we are asking for the support of our members at the fullest extent. I understand that a lot of members are members to support the club and our local trails but yet do not want to be the die-hard volunteer and the member that is at every meeting. HVR needs its members to keep us running and standing strong. Yes we receive state Funding and we have a lot of members that do a lot of volunteer work. But the funding is only for our trails.  The membership and volunteer part is what puts that funding to work.  Please do not hesitate to contact Jim Fyfe at 585-624-4482 or Clint VanDewark at 585-367-9216 to volunteer. We can jot your name down and be able to call you in our times of needs!  If we are not home just leave us a brief message. Every time we have an event, we all have a great time and it results in a lot of stories and laughs. Trail work such as bridge building and trail clearing is also coming up so if you like running chain saws, watching trees fall, making noise, laughing, getting dirty, using a hammer or a screw gun please give us a call.

DEC Days September 25th & 26th

Location: Route 5&20 between Avon & Lima

The Club will have a booth there to sell 50/50 and chicken barbeque tickets and as well as promote membership.  This is also a great chance to get our name out to the public.  We will need volunteers for this event as we try to have two people in the morning and two in the afternoon for both Saturday and Sunday.  For details please contact Jim Fyfe at: (585) 624-4482.

Breakfast October 3rd

Location: The Honeoye Fish and Game Club

The Fish and game club has asked us to do a breakfast the morning of their first shoot of the season. People have named this breakfast one of the best for there league. The money raised will go to HVR.  Volunteers will be needed for this, as well.  This event usually lasts until 11:30/12:00 or until the food is gone.  For details contact Jim Fyfe at: (585) 624-4482.

The Chicken BBQ October 16th

This is going to be quite the event!  Scott Wohlschlegel will be holding a Child Safety Training Class that runs from 8:00am until 5:00pm that includes Certification. Grooming Equipment will be on display along with new sleds and trailers by local dealers. Vendors will be setting up the morning of the 16th.  If you have a business and would like to bring stuff down or have a booth, please contact Clint VanDewark. A 50/50 Drawing will be held about 4:00pm tickets are $1.00 each and start selling on September 16th. These tickets can be picked up at any club event or a member that has requested to volunteer to sell them. BBQ Tickets are also available!   Presale tickets are $7.00 each and day of will be $7.50 each. For more details, please contact Clint VanDewark at: (585) 367-9216. For details on the Training Class, please contact Scott Wohlschlegel (585) 229-5104. We need volunteers to help with the training and serving of food, tickets and memberships.

Note: Pre-registration for the training class is recommended to assure your spot in the class be sure to contact Scott Wohlschlegel as soon as you can if you are interested. This certification is required by NYS if you are under the age of 18 to be able to ride alone on the trails. Tickets can be issued for not having this certification.

Note: If you have a used sled for sale and would like to have it at the Chicken BBQ please contact Clint V.

Memberships,

Please return your membership renewal as soon as possible to help us to get your membership in to NYSSA and to have our files updated for insurance, mailings, maps, ect… This should be an exciting season and also a lot of fun we look forward to you continuing your membership and the new members that have joined us. We will hope to see you out on the trail, at meetings, or participating in some of the events thought the season. Thank you for your support and pray for Snow.

What's going on behind the scenes?

The month of April started off with the annual NYSSA meeting in Auburn NY. We were represented at this meeting By: Jim Fyfe and Todd Manley who attended various seminars on trail funding, record keeping, insurance, and the Annual meeting where voting occurs for issues and needs for the upcoming season.  Major items that may change for this upcoming season at a statewide level are NYS registration fees. These fees may jump to $100.00 per sled unless you are a member of a club. If you are a club member your registration fee would be reduced to $45.00 a large incentive to being apart of a club. NYS and Clubs within it are pushing this in a goal to be able to provide riders with a trail permit system and the ability for NYS trails to be equivalent to those you may here of or ride on in Canada. With this increase means an increase in the amount of funding we receive from the state for our trail system right here in our back yard.

Soon after the NYSSA meeting a meeting was set up in the town of Shortsville to discuss the need for Ontario County to get involved with the local clubs and communities for Trail Funding, and the development of a county wide trail plan. We were represented at this meeting By: Clint VanDewark and Dwight Slocum where we explained how we were involved through the towns of Richmond and Canadice for trail funding and how the funding system works and worked for us. This started a series of events to unfold; the meeting had sparked some definite interest in the County. With Dave Phillips supporting HVR and key people from various clubs. They worked with Ontario County to develop a County wide trail plan. This plan has been accepted and by May 31st Ontario County Submitted a Trail plan to NYSSA & NYS Parks to become a sponsor for the county. With this change our club will see an increase in funding from 17miles of funded trails to 36miles of funded trails. An approximate dollar figure could be around $6,000.00 with out the registration increase.

The month of June started off with a bang similar to April on June 5th Clint VanDewark attended a Park advisory board meeting for the users of Harriet Hollister Spencer Park. At this meeting multiple topics were discussed and HVR's involvement with the Park was a big one. With the Corridor Trail running through the park it opens doors for the park in regards to funding and park improvements. With this HVR is now looked at as a very good asset to the park and other user groups are recognizing it. The Nordic cross country Ski Group is looking to work with us on events and trail improvements, The Park wants our input on trail Improvements and parking lot improvements. These are big days and we HVR are a big part of them.

Other exciting news that is moving forward is our Grooming Equipment. Dave Phillips & Clint VanDewark have been looking for the right piece of equipment. This past season the topic of grooming came up a lot and the purchase of a larger piece of equipment was discussed at about every meeting. We discussed everything from another sled and drag, Argo and drag, Bombardier Equipment, etc.,. But on June 17th the officers of HVR discussed what concerns members have voiced and along with the officers own concerns and thoughts. At this time we voted to move ahead to the Purchase of a Bombardier Bombi and Drag. This is a big jump but it will improve the riding in the area considerably there will be a learning curve but it will be defiantly worth it.

Over view:

With the funding changes and our involvement within the Communities has brought us to another level as a Snowmobile Club:

Scott Wolschlegel is currently working with the town of Richmond on the Sandy Bottom trail. Where HVR would be providing the materials to improve this trail by adding culverts and signage. Making this trail safer for snowmobiles and more useable for the community in the summer months.

Clint VanDewark is currently working with the town of Canadice and NYS Parks on the Parking lot expansion at Harriet Hollister Spencer Park for Snowmobile Trailers and Snowmobile access; this is planed to be done for the 2005 & 2006 season. Along with the improvements to the Canadice Hill Rd. section of trail this year and the first Annual Chicken BBQ.

Dave Phillips is currently working with the county and keeping HVR in the loop as things evolve with the new funding.  Along with the new trail to connect our trail system into the Finger lakes trail system witch is apart of the County Wide Plan making Corridor 4 connect to the Wayne County trail system.

Dwight Slocum is currently heading up the HHSP Improvements that will happen this September and working with Clint as the Parking lot expansion and bathroom facility starts to unfold.

Jim Fyfe is starting to pull together the info and support for the upcoming events.

Chip & Ann Reitz have been maintaining all our expenses and recording what is coming in Our Current Balance is:_______.

Kim Phillips has been working with the news letters and documenting are official changes such as Grooming equipment and state funding.

All the officers are currently keeping in touch as the purchase of a Bombardier Bombi is in the works to assure the purchase and paperwork is done right.

Summer Picnic:

The Picnic will be held at Bob Gray's house on August 21st starting at 1:00pm HVR will be supplying Hotdogs, Hamburg's, and beverages, Members are asked to bring a dish to pass a smile, sunshine and an appetite. Please contact Jim Fyfe at: (585)-624-4482 if you are planning on attending, This way the club will know how much food to provide. Directions: From Honeoye take Rte. 20A East to the Wizard of Clay. Turn right on County Rd. 32 and go about three miles.  Then turn right on Ganyard Hill Road and go to the intersection.  Turn right onto a dirt drive. Ref: Pond and brown barn and house. (7541 East Hall Rd.).

 Chicken BBQ:

The Chicken BBQ is tentavely scheduled for October 16th at the Richmond Town hall Gazebo. Plans are to have grooming equipment and snowmobiles on display. We may possibly do some type of breakfast in the morning at the same location.  There would be an all day 50/50 raffle, and door prizes. Note: This event is a work in progress and we are looking for help and suggestions.  Please contact: Clint VanDewark (585) 367-9216 if you would like to contribute either suggestions or your help.

Another snowmobiling year has come and gone.  Overall, we had a good year for riding around here, again. We did not have any major complaints and that again proves that our Club is promoting snowmobiling responsibly and doing a good job communicating with landowners in the community.  Each of the district coordinators in our Club will take care of their respective areas to assure all trail signs are removed for spring.  The trail signs will be coming down the end of March.

Some future work needs to occur this year to further develop our trail system.  Work will be done to upgrade the trail to Lock’s. Robert Gray and Rich Kraft will be working on redefining the trail to Lower Egypt Rd. so that the trail is wider, less steep and to keep snowmobiles off the lower Egypt Rd.  They will also be doing more work on the trail to the Hemlock Sportsman’s Club.  Rich Kraft was instrumental in establishing this trail earlier this year.

Our Club will also find out this year whether the Town of Richmond will allow us to continue use of the Nature Trail out to Sandy Bottom Park.  If the Town approves our future use of this trail, a couple of bridges or drain tiles will need to be installed so that the trail is safer and set up for multi use.

It also appears that surrounding snowmobile clubs are starting to get involved and are trying to connect into the HVR trail system.  Finger Lakes Snowmobile Club is looking to run a trail over from the Bloomfield area.  Our Club could work their way with our trail system to the Town line on Co. Rd. 40.

There is also a new club forming in Livingston Co. that is getting into the act and they plan on getting trails posted into our region that would allow access to Letchworth etc.,.  Their meeting dates are the 1st and 3rd Thursday at the Genesee River Restaurant and Conference Center on Rt. 36 in Mt. Morris.  Call 658-2928 for more information.

What really needs to happen is for Atlanta, Wayland, and Cohocton snowmobilers to become engaged and get their old Quad County Snowmobile club up and running before snowmobiling becomes restrained and off limits in this area.  This area is lacking big time for marked trails and making sure snowmobilers are riding where they are supposed to.  There is so much to offer in this area and it is in a great spot to be a great connector for future tails with other counties.  Quad County could be getting trail funding from the state, grooming the old rail bed (or electric line access), and have the best trails in the area. Anyone that has connections in this area should get involved and get the club renewed, up and running.

Notes from March meeting:

By the April meeting, we as a club will have to decide whether or not we will be purchasing another groomer.  Spring would be the best time to purchase this.  There was also mention of possibly paying someone to groom next year on a full-time basis.  With two groomers running and a full time person running these, the trails would really be well maintained and it would free up our time as members to really get more time to enjoy them.  By May 31st we have to have all receipts in to the state showing what we used our trail funding money on, so this decision will be made at our next meeting on Thursday, April 15th.

There was also mention of possibly sometime in the future getting our funding through Ontario County instead of individual towns.   This would get the club a lot more funding because of the increase in miles, along with a lot less paperwork for our club.  This is something to possibly consider down the road.

During our elections for the 2004-2005 season, it was mentioned that we might want to consider having an equipment manager in the future.  This is something we also need to keep in mind, especially as we begin to purchase more equipment for our club.

Thank You to Neptune’s for the $100 donation to our Club from the proceeds of the drag sled event that was held there this winter.

On Sunday, May 2nd, the Honeoye Gun Club is hosting a Livingston County Trap league function.  We were offered the opportunity to serve breakfast and lunch at this event.   Anyone interested in helping out with this should contact Jim Fyfe at 624-4482.

FYI- There is a band playing at the Gun Club on Saturday night, April 17th.

Treasurer notes:

We currently have a  $4300 balance and we are still waiting on the remaining 30% due from the trail funding (which is approx. $1400).  Overall, the club is in good shape financially.

This should only take a maximum of two hours. If you have trimming shears or pruners, please bring them. Remember, the more people that help out, the quicker we can all be done!

Thanks to Bob Gray for working to obtain area Business members that would like to be part of our club and have their advertisement on our map. It’s great to have the businesses tied into our sport. We support local business and local business supports us. It’s a great bond. Thanks to Clint VanDewark for the great job on the map.

This year our Hill and Valley Riders, Inc. District Trail Coordinators have done a great job getting the signs up in their respective areas. Without these groups of people performing their jobs, the trails would not be properly marked out for the season. Touring around the trail system we can clearly see big improvements compared to a year or more ago. Great work by the trail coordinators. The following is the list of coordinators and their areas. More help can always be used to help get the sign done year after year.

Election of new officers is coming up in March. Change is good for the Club. Electing new people to the Club’s management positions brings new ideas to the Club and keeps it invigorated. The Club is in very good shape management wise and runs very effectively and relatively efficiently, considering it is all voluntary work. By following the Club’s management system such as By-Laws, job descriptions and the diagram of responsibilities/job functions, the Club will almost run its self. All it takes is commitment to doing a good job and a sincere desire to be strong advocate of the sport of snowmobiling. Please consider running for a position in the club. You will have a lot of fun, meet new friends and bring about change that can enhance our snowmobile club. The president’s role is up for re-election this year. Scott Wohlschlegel has been president for 10 years. There is now a 3 year maximum for any of the clubs management positions.

We want to thank the Town of Canadice and Richmond for their support and belief in our Club and snowmobiling in our area. What a great place to live, work and play. We could not be successful without the town’s help and involvement. We appreciate all that has been done by the members of both town boards, both in discussions and voting to support our clubs mission. Thank you Canadice and Richmond.

This year’s trail grant money awarded to our Club is approximately $1700.00 for Canadice and $3000.00 for Richmond. HVR purchased a new pull behind groomer. You can see a picture of it on our website under the trail conditions section (www.hillandvalleyriders.com ).

Your President of HVR has written many letters on behalf of our club to our elected officials in NYS and in Washington in support of snowmobiling in public parks. Now it is time for all snowmobilers nation wide to speak up and write letters to their representatives. You can find you senate and house representatives by going to the NYSSA website (nyssa@borg.com). Numbers speak loudly.

Secretarial notes:

All paid members names have been turned in to NYSSA and everyone should have received their NYSSA card. If you did not, please e-mail me at kim@dptool.com and I will get one out to you. This goes for any extra NYSSA or HVR stickers that you may need for any additional sleds you own.

With the membership listing all up to date, we currently have 130 members for the 2003-2004 season. 23 of these are businesses. We would like to welcome 14 new members, 2 of which are business memberships. In comparison with last year, we are down 28 members (6 of which were Business). Let’s continue to spread the word regarding our club and get those figures growing.

Financial Status:

With the sales of the raffle tickets now being all complete, the club made a total profit of $882. Last year we made a profit of $951, so it was good to see that the figure stayed within a close range. Thank you to everyone that helped out with the selling of these. As you can see, it definitely pays off in the end.

Balance: 3,540.09

Congratulations to Chip Reitz, our 50/50 raffle winner from our January meeting.

Date: November/ December  2003

At the time of this writing, we have had our 1st snowfall (1-2”) and all ready snowmobile tracks have been seen on some of trails down in town and in the vicinity of the school property.  People need to remember that we should not be riding any trails with marginal snow (1-2” is marginal snow).  Snowmobiles are highly scrutinized and in some cases it could mean a trail being closed.  Generally, 3”> is a minimum requirement and a good rule of thumb for riding.

Deer season and snowmobiling is another bone of contention with landowners.  Many landowners hunt and want their time in the woods without snowmobiles interrupting their hunt.  Hill and Valley Riders, Inc. respects the landowner’s rights and we have signs indicating trails closed until December 16, 2003 when the entire deer season officially closes.  Please respect the landowners and stay off the trails until 12/17/03.

Club Christmas Party will be on Sunday, December 14, 2003 at 2:00 PM.

January 15, 2004, 7:30 pm, snowmobile club meeting at the Gun Club on Howcroft Rd.

February 5, 2004, 7:30 pm, snowmobile club meeting at the Gun Club on Howcroft Rd.  (Note the date change of this meeting).

 NEWS:

Memberships are down this year.  We need to keep memberships up to date and increase membership to accomplish all the trail improvements we have planned.  Those that have not paid by the Club Christmas party will be removed from the member listing.  Another form is enclosed with this letter.  This is the last reminder.   Remember, HVR snowmobile club secures trails use through over 91 different landowners every year.  The trails would not be here locally if not for the club.   Landowners prefer working with an organized club.  We also carry trail insurance, which individuals cannot.  Having trails in our area is a wonderful asset that needs everyone’s support that lives and rides in our community.   Please get your registration fee mailed in.  After submitting these forms, they will be processed by HVR (Hill and Valley Riders, Inc. secretary and you will become a HVR and a NYSSA (New York State Snowmobile Assoc.) member.  A NYSSA card and a decal will be mailed to you after we have processed your information.

NYSSA raffle tickets were mailed out to each member earlier this year.  To date, not many have been returned.  This is rather disappointing being that this is one of our major fundraisers for the club.    Hopefully, everyone has received them and is helping out by selling their 12 tickets.  Thanks to those that have already sold theirs and in return, asked for more to sell.  Remember, HVR gets to keep ½ of the money raised from the raffle ticket sales.   If these fundraisers continue to slide, membership rates may need to increase in future years to compensate.   All NYSSA raffle tickets/money due by the club Christmas party.

Hit the HVR Website Hillandvalleyriders.com for up to date club information, map information and Club registration forms.

 TRAIL INFORMATION:

Trail clearing and sign posting went well this year with all major trail sign up and ready for the season.  Thanks to Bob Gray, Dave Phillips, Clint VanDewark, Garry Wohlschlegel, Scott Wohlschlegel, Dwight Slocum and Jim and Tim Maloney for coordinating their areas and making sure the signs are up.   Clint VanDewark and some other club members have been working on trimming out trails in Spencer Park and working on routing the trail along Canadice Hill Road further off the road to reduce road riding.  Clint has been working hard with local landowners to get permission to run on private property.  Clint has made some good headway on this project.  One of the bridges washed out on the corridor 4 trail off Cole Rd.  The Club has voted to not replace the bridge but instead re-route the trail.  Please look for changes in the trails signs for this area.

HVR club president made a presentation to the Town of Richmond to reconsider allowing snowmobiles to utilize the trail from Town to the Lake (Sandy Bottom Trail).  HVR has proposed building a bridge over a creek, and fixing up the road to the park. Snowmobilers (both local and visitors) would benefit by having excess to and from the lake.  The Town Residents would benefit by having an improved, safe trail with improved excess for children to and from the Sandy Bottom Park and skate park area.  The Town will vote on allowing our club to utilize the trail on a trial basis and then decide after this year if they want the club to continue use this next year.    State funding is available to our Club through New York State Park and Historic Preservation snowmobile trail program.

 SPECIAL EVENTS:

The pancake breakfast was a success.  Not as many people turned out for the event as was expected.   However, we still had a great time and thanks to the many club members that helped make it a success.  Thank you to the Gun Club for allowing us to utilize the facility.

This years Christmas Party will be held at at the Honeoye Fish and Game Club on Howcroft Rd., on Sunday, December 14, 2003 at 2:00 PM.  Please bring a favorite prepared dish to pass.  If you wish to participate, bring a gift for a man and/or woman to exchange and a gift for your own child to open.

The HVR Steak Roast will be held on January 24, 2004.  Planning is taking place by Vickie Lewis and Vickie Wohlschlegel for an evening dinner.  Stay tuned in future newsletters and for an invitation to this event.

Rumor has it that the Honeoye Winter Carnival at Neptune’s on Honeoye Lake will occur in February around the 6th 7th or 8th.  Stay tuned in future newsletters.

Sunday, January 11, 2004, at 9:00 AM a ride in breakfast at ACES in Honeoye will occur.  The ride will leave ACES and continue on to North Cohocton to the Mountain View in for Chicken dinner later on Sunday.  Scott Wohlschlegel will lead this event.

October 16, 2003

Well, here we are at the beginning of a hopefully great snowmobiling season.  Our first meeting was held in September and attendance was outstanding.  Our next meeting is being held on Thursday, November 20, 2003 at the Fish and Game Club on Howcroft Rd. 7:30 PM.

November 21, 2002 will be at the Fish and Game Club on Howcroft Rd. 7:30 PM.  No meeting in December.  Christmas Party will replace the meeting.  See special event section of this newsletter.

NEWS:

As you have probably noticed in the September issue, enclosed were the 2003-2004 member dues forms.  Please try to have these mailed back in before the December meeting.  Those that have not paid by the Club Christmas party  will have to be removed from the member listing.  After submitting these forms, they will be processed by HVR (Hill and Valley Riders, Inc. secretary and you will become a HVR and a NYSSA (New York State Snowmobile Assoc.) member.  A NYSSA card and a decal will be mailed to you after we have processed your information.

The NYSSA raffle tickets were all mailed out with the exception of the amount that we held on to for the DEC days.  Hopefully everyone has received them and is helping out by selling their 12 tickets.  Thanks to those that have already sold theirs and in return, asked for more to sell.  Remember, HVR gets to keep ½ of the money raised from the raffle ticket sales.

Just a reminder to everyone, you can use the hotline # to leave any messages OR to check any posted messages.  This is a great way to relay information and/or any concerns.  The number is 234-0108.  Please follow the message prompts to guide you through the messaging process.

Don’t forget our Website Hillandvalleyriders.com for up to date club information, map information and Club registration forms.

TRAIL INFORMATION:

Clint VanDewark (HVR Vice President) is in the process of setting up a grooming team for grooming this coming season.  The plan is to keep the groomer at the Gun Club, which is on the trail system.

Trail clearing and sign posting day is set for November 2, 2003 at 12:00 noon at the Gun club.  Members are asked to be there on time and groups of folks will be sent out to inspect the trails and mount new signs/posts where needed.  All signs should be up on the trails by 11/12/02.  Dave Phillips will be contacting the necessary trail coordinators making sure the trails districts are set with sign posting.

Trail funding applications have been submitted for both Richmond and Canadice townships.  We have not heard from the state on the trails funding amounts but expect word soon.  The amounts to each club may be lower this year because of a statewide trail insurance policy that is likely to be implemented.  The trail-funding program would pay for the policy.  Therefore, amounts to each club would be affected.  There will be more information on the insurance program in the next newsletter.

One of the bridges washed out on the corridor 4 trail off Cole Rd.  The Club has voted to not replace the bridge but instead re-route the trail.  The creek banks are low and the Club is concerned that the bridge could be washed out again.  Therefore, it would be a waste of time and money to build another bridge.  Please look for changes in the trails signs for this area.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

The pancake breakfast is being held on November 9th at the Honeoye Fish and Game Club on Howcroft Rd.    Jim Fyfe is coordinating this event and he is looking for some help.   Please volunteer to by calling Jim at 624-4482.  Kim Phillips will be making up a flyer that will be placed in some local businesses and also an advertisement will be placed in “On the Trail”.   Bob Gray will put place an advertisement in the Valley News inviting members and guests.

September 8, 2003

Our 1st meeting date is THURSDAY, SEPT. 18TH AT 7:30 P.M., at the Honeoye Gun Club, on Howcroft Rd.

Hi everyone!  Yes, it’s THAT time again… The leaves will be falling soon and everyone knows what starts falling after that!

The “late” summer picnic turned out to be another success with good food, good weather, and good times amongst friends.  I think I speak for everyone when I say a big “Thank You” to Bob and Ann Marie Gray for hosting this party at their home again this year.   Your hospitality was much appreciated!   Unfortunately, the camera got left on the counter at home, so there aren’t any pictures to post to the Web site!

Enclosed in this newsletter you will find your registration forms for the 2003-2004 snowmobile season.  These will need to be filled out and mailed back to me or you can give them to me at the meeting.  The deadline for returning these to me is November 20th.  If they are not returned to me by then, you will be removed from the membership mailing list.  Also, we have enclosed raffle tickets for you to sell.  They will sell for: 1 for $3.00 or 2 for $5.00.  You can buy these all yourself or you may choose to sell them.  If you need extras, I will have some with me at the meetings.  If you cannot attend the meeting, just give me a call and I would be happy to mail you some more.  They do need to be turned in by NO LATER than at the club Christmas party on 12/21/03.     The money needs to be returned to our Treasurer, Chip Reitz (367-8546) either at a club meeting or by mailing a check directly to Chip’s house at 9406 Big Tree Rd, Hemlock, NY  14466.

The reason that we ask you to sell these:

This money helps buy trail signs, improve trails, and it will help pay for each member to automatically become a member of NYSSA.  As a member of NYSSA, we are now required to have each Hill and Valley Rider, Inc. member to be a NYSSA member.  By helping to sell your raffle tickets, each Club member is involved in the fund raising and not just a select few.  In the past years, approximately 40 members did all the ticket selling, while others did not participate.  If everyone participates and sells their allotted tickets, we will have a fantastic fundraiser.  Please participate and be an active member.

We get to keep ½ of the proceeds from the raffle ticket sales.  This is a good deal for everyone involved.

TRAIL NEWS:

After much paperwork and many town meetings, we have been approved for the 9 miles of corridor trail through the Town of Canadice.  We should be getting approximately $6,000 from the state this year for trail funding with the addition of Richmond and Canadice now being added to our trail system.

The purchase of the new groomer is being temporarily put on hold until we find out how much insurance is going to cost this year.  We should be getting this information shortly.

EVENTS:

The NYSDEC fish and wildlife days are being held September 27th and 28th (Saturday and Sunday).  Our club has a booth at this every year and we will need volunteers to help out.   We usually sell approximately 300-400 raffle tickets at this event.  If anyone can help out, contact Jim Fyfe, our Events Coordinator, at 624-4482.

The youth snowmobile-training course is scheduled to be at the Finger Lakes Snowmobile Club Snow Show on Saturday, November 1, 2003.  The event is being held at the Four Seasons Gift shop on Rt. 332 in Canandaigua.  Class registration starts at 8:30 a.m.  If you would like to sign any of your children up, you will need to contact Vickie O’Neill at O’Neill Polaris in Farmington (924-2554).
